Parliament

Parliament is a bicameral, legislative body that consists of the Senate (the Upper House) and the Majilis (the Lower House). The Constitutional reforms in 2007 allowed for the number of members to increase in both houses. The Senate expanded from 39 to 47, permitting the President to appoint 15 of the most prominent public figures, academics, and intellectuals in Kazakhstan to this House. The Majilis, functioning as the main legislative body, added 30 members to their previous allotment of 77, with 98 of these 107 Majilis deputies elected in a nationwide constituency on the basis of proportional party lists. The remaining nine are selected by the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan, a grouping of more than 100 ethnic minorities in Kazakhstan.
