The author of the project is Behgjet Pacolli.

Technical equipment of the Theatre:

The main auditorium is designed for 1,250 people, made in Italian style. Spectator places are located in parterre, dress-circle and three tiers of boxes of upper level. On the third level there are lateral galleries.

Parterre accommodates 450 seats, each of them is arranged to provide spectators good visibility. The lower level of parterre floor is one meter below the level of the stage and in the depths of parterre the floor reaches +3,60 m.

There is mezzanine around parterre on slightly elevated level. Lodges are passing around the perimeter of the binding element. The third tier of the balcony is located at 13 m.

Theatre machinery

Dimensions of theatre machinery are thought so that to create and perform on this scene the most important world operas, ballets and concerts. Its volume is comparable to the world’s main theaters.

Theater machinery consists of all stage and auxiliary areas for actors and stage workers. These include: the stage with arerscene and side «pockets» of the stage. Planimetric distribution of this space is based on the specifics of separate actions and their interaction with each other, creating entire theater machine.

Scene and arerscene

Next to the central stage (935 m2) there are 2 side «pockets» and arerscene (height 16 m), and next to them — the art staging area. Below the stage there is a hold that goes down to 13 meters, there is the movement of four central elevators.

Decorations are made in large space of arerscene, it is the special place for pre-installation process, before they are moved to the approved part of the scene for them. Thus, arerscene gets dual purpose: workshop and storage for decorations. In addition, its dimensions allow the using of that space for stage trials, putting together variety of ready-made decorations.

Thus created theater machinery allows to prepare completely decorations for performance in three acts, not counting the already installed on the stage.

Also the orchestra pit is impressive, designed for 120 people. It consists of three platforms on different levels: the lower level at — 1,10 m for entry of musicians and bringing in tools, to the top parterre level + 1.50 m

Taking into account the fact that independent creation of decorations in the theater is planned, in the theater a large workshop and a number of specialized workshops were specially built, that can provide simultaneous working of carpenters, blacksmiths, sculptors, painters, plasterers, decorators in separate equipped rooms. Space in the workshop is for collection, preparation, storage of decorations. Ready decorations are lifted on the main stage with special elevator platforms named furka. For this reason, workshops are located at the scene level.

Decoration departments (decor workshop, sham workshop, theater painting workshop) are located in the part of arerscene at the loading and unloading of material level (+1.00 m relative to the road level). Their height ranges from 8,00 m of the biggest workshops, up to 4,00 m of the theatrical painting workshops. The workshop area is also changing: from 500 sq.m. in decoration workshops up to 300 m in painting workshops. Each workshop has its own dressing room and toilet. These workshops are separated from the stage by a movable fireproof partition providing soundproofing.

Costume workshops are located at +7,25 m and directly connected to the level of loading and unloading of ready materials level by elevators. They are also connected with all makeup rooms by elevators and stairs. In addition to working sewing shop (180 m2) and laundry — ironing room (30 m2) there are costumes storage room, dressing rooms are provided.

Rehearsal and make-up. rooms

Auxiliary accommodations (dressing rooms, artistic lavatories, small rehearsal rooms) are located at different levels on the both sides of the stage tower and designed in such a way as to reduce the minimum the distance between the stage and make-up rooms, which are connected by a system of vertical joints. Rehearsal and make-up rooms are divided into sectors:

Halls for orchestra rehearsals require great height. «ASTANA OPERA» has large rehearsal rooms for percussion instruments, two halls with height of 6.5 m, and six small halls with height of 5m. Given the fact that the requirements of acoustics in these halls provide no output up, these rehearsal rooms were placed under the side pockets of the scene. Also there are 11 additional small rehearsal rooms (20m2 each) for musicians. The ideal location of these halls — in direct vicinity to the makeup rooms of orchestra, for musicians could use them to «warm up» instruments before the performance, not going to the rehearsals of underground level, or use them as usual rehearsals.

At the level of -0.10 m there are provided for100 people: 14 makeup rooms for different orchestral groups, which can accommodate from 4 to 14 seats/ persons, two makeup rooms for producer assistants, make-up room for violin and makeup room for conductor.

Because of large size (the surface is equal to the surface of the stage, height-12m) the large orchestra rehearsal room is located on one side of the stage towers, above one of the pockets of the scene (level +21, 50 m). The large orchestra rehearsal room, total area is 550 square meters., is able to fully accommodate the orchestra and chorus.

Chorus consists of 90 people, it is partially located on one floor with the sewing workshop at +7, 25 m level, and is connected with the stage by stairs and elevators, that reduces the time required to change costumes. Such location makes seamstresses’ work optimal with the need of repeated costume changes during the performance. On the underground level there are additional makeup rooms for the choir. Large rehearsals for the choir are located above the pocket stage (level + 21.00 m), choral rooms (total square is about 245m2) are designed only for choir repetitions.

The ballet troupe

Ballet hall, the area of which is similar to the area of the scene with direct illumination. At this level two rooms for soloists, 9 makeup rooms, 30 sq.m for 9 makeup places, makeup rooms for the first dancers and the choreographer, ballet school and gym (the level above) are located. Network of vertical and horizontal passageways easily connect these areas with the stage. Also room for the massage therapist, physiotherapist, first-aid post are provided.

Stage director room

At level +12, 00m level the room for general rehearsals is located, with the ceiling height not less than 7, 00 m, which is equal to the size of the theater stage, that gives the stage director opportunity to rehearse in «natural scope». This hall is located above the artistic staging workshop and connected with it by hoist, that provides fast and efficient movement of finished decorations on the stage level. Hall does not require natural lighting.

Light control installation, installation of the light projection, control panel of soundman in spectator hall at the second balcony tier.

Materials of the theater

The facade is decorated with natural stone of different treatments to create a décor typical to the theater in  classical style. The interior contains large rusticated plates (at the bottom of the facade), and smooth plate (in the upper part of the facade), alternating with pilasters, cornices and decorative frames of large windows.

The windows are made of brass, more precisely of aluminum, that looks like brass, warm color of brass combines with high-quality facade system.

The roof is covered with pre-oxidized and stabilized copper plates. Material of natural green color is ideal for curved roof forms.

The floors in foyer are laid out with natural stone, wall coverings are decorated with cornices, pilasters and patterns.

The main hall is embellished with decorative moldings and laid with wood and brass plates.

Materials provided for artists’ rooms were selected based on their functionality and acoustic characteristics.
